Stephen Morrison sculpts dogs. Born in 1991 in Maine, He earned his BFA from the Laguna College of Art. He received the Ellen Battell Stoeckel Fellowship to the Yale Norfolk Summer School of Art and was a resident at the New York Studio Residency Program. He lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
For me, there is nothing more complicated than my relationship with dogs. I find them charming and humorous, of course, but I also recognize myself in them. Their domesticated tendency towards codependent love-- a mix of obedience, submission, and affection, is something I share for better or for worse. Because of this, I use my practice to create dog sculptures in my own image, playing with my feelings of disappointment, anxiety, and desire. By projecting these emotions onto my surreal dog characters, I attempt to transform them into something a little more joyful and tender.
