In my work I focus on capturing moments of everyday life through a surrealist lense. With bright colors and distorted configurations, I aim to explore an alternate reality where carefree Blackness can exist without the confines of systemic racism. I want to shake the foundations of Western art history by making myself the standard.
Bio:
Lauryn Levette is currently a senior studying Painting at Rhode Island School of Design. Her practice revolves around exploring a vibrant, dreamlike alternative reality which reflects the Black experience. These paintings are based on personal narratives and experiences as she articulates her gaze with her own voice, as a way to push back against the idea of Black people as monolithic.
